The bookmobile has been around forever. Don't know where you find stats on the phenomenon, but my town (Oakland CA) certainly has one. I just saw it parked outside the local low-income subsidized after-school center; and it also visits the local Native American charter school.
Public libraries are a fabulous institution. If the libraries die out then America won't be worth living in.
